Penicillin.
I was asked in one of medical school interviews, “What do you think is the most important discovery/invention in medicine in the last 100 years?”
Arguably, penicillin, discovered by Sir Alexander Fleming is one of them, if not, the one. Probably the best accident to happen since Coca-Cola, or the potato crisp.
Fleming was definitely not looking for this elusive compound when he was studying his microbes on his agar plate.
This compound helped soldiers in the wars, helped the scientific community develop and helped the (then) new field of microbiology to develop. Antibiotics having been discovered, were the path to revolutionising healthcare around the world.
